Halloweenies are my absolute favorites. I don't know who I will get as my partner yet, but I'm already starting to try to pull together ideas. If anyone has suggestions, please send them my way!

It's been so awfully hot here! The heat index has been well into the 100's every day. You can't get outside to do anything and my side yard needs a lot of attention! Just have to force myself to get up EARLY this weekend so I can get out there and pull potato vines again. Woo hoo what fun (not)!

Hope you are finding ways to stay cool this summer! Don't forget to send me Halloween suggestions - I'd LOVE to hear them!

Margaret

Increasing My Stash

I've been SO bad recently! I've still been cooking, though my stitching hasn't been very productive.

I have recently begun updated my stash collection which is motivating me tremendously. I hope to have some things to show you before too long, if you'll still look at my blog that is! My daughter has been SO excited about middle school, heck, just about school restarting! New binders, folders, pencils, pens and other wonderful and fun supplies just speak to her!

There was a little mix up with the elementary school and as a result, no schedule yet. We should have her schedule either tomorrow afternoon or the morning of the first day, which is Wednesday. Still, we enjoyed visiting the 6th grade wing and meeting all of the teachers. I think she's most excited at the prospect of taking a half a year of agriculture! It's so funny what appeals to children, isn't it?

New clothes, shoes, supplies and to top the list - new Vera Bradley backpack all ready for school. Gone are the cutesy backpacks, but thank goodness she hasn't latched on to the "teen scene" yet! She's 11 going on 12 not 18 (thank you Lord!).

I, on the other hand, want those little girl pigtails and Gymboree outfits, Hello Kitty sandals and Eeyore backpackwith baby dolls, little nap mat and loose crayons back right now! I think I need a hug.

Ah - Summertime

I do envy my kids and their summer holiday. They haven't a clue! I always enjoyed school and never found it a chore or burden, but summer holiday - who wouldn't be excited?

There have always been a few things that define summertime to me. Let's see if you agree!

The scent of freshly mown grass that's been hit by the hot sunshine. It just has a very unique scent and it wasn't until later in life while doing a little traveling that I realized not everyone was privy to this fragrance and how it evoked summertime.

Charcoal grilled hamburgers and hotdogs (or anything for that matter!) - Now I love a gas grill, no waiting. Just push a button and instant heating and in just a matter of a few minutes you are grilling away! But honestly, can you say that those hamburgers and hotdogs of your youth with that faint hint of charcoal lighter fluid tinged flavor mixed with smokey charcoal goodness can ever be duplicated?

Homemade ice cream - and I don't care if you make a custard first or dump ingredients, it still has to be in a churn that requires tons of cracked ice and rock salt and lots and lots of arm cranking! I have worn out an electric churn or two, but the true definition of summertime homemade ice cream has to come from an exhausting, hand-cranking ice cream churn!

Catching lightening bugs and putting them in a jar. In what seems like eons ago when I was young and my sisters even younger, we'd always visit our grandmother's house in Tennessee during the summer. This was one of our favorite things to do. We'd go out in the big backyard and run around catching the little blinkies and put them in a mason jar. We were ahead of our time - we were "green" even back then!

Growing up so close to the beach, there was a special summertime scent of Hawaiin Tropic suntan oil, salt combined with the sound of the whistle of the wind on the dunes and waves - not to mention the occasional seagull. What a summertime combination!

Running and jumping into the swimming pool, hearing that splash and knowing your body was going to be in shock until it adjusted to the temperature. There's only so much waiting a kid can take when there's a sparkling pool beckoning them to jump into! So what if the water hadn't warmed up quite enough yet - it was summer and that means swimming! Not to mention the smell of all the chlorine my dad would put in the pool because he loved that crystal clear water. So I guess I can also add the screaming of three girls rubbing their red, bloodshot eyes fried by said chlorine - but by gosh that pool sparkled!

Not having to come inside until way past the normal school year time because it was still light out and no adults seemed to pay that close attention to the clock then. The neighborhood kids had a field to play in and play we did until way past schoolyear time.

The burning of soles of our feet on the REALLY hot, nearly melting asphalt roads because who in their right mind wears shoes in the summer?

These are just a few of the things that make summer for me. Tell me what makes summer for you?

Margaret

Happy Bastille Day!

Vive la France!

Just a little snappy of me in my darling red beret!

A Different Mary

While I'm still working on Miss Mary Mack, I've also decided to join the wonderful Mary Wigham SAL. Actually, I decided awhile back, but not checking my fabric closely enough, I didn't catch that the linen wasn't large enough! So - I had to order new fabric and wait for it to arrive, which it did yesterday. Now I just have to work up the energy to start it!

I think I want to do it as a monochromatic piece. I'm really drawn to black and think it would look striking, but I also have been thinking of a deep olive green. The fabric is 28 ct Permin (these eyes just couldn't go smaller) in the color Latte. What do you think of these floss color choices? I'd love to hear before I start on this.

Summer is just rolling along and it's HOT! I don't even think we could get any relief at the beach lately. Thank goodness for air conditioning. This hot weather certainly hasn't made me want to get in the kitchen and cook, so I think it's time to share another cool recipe!

5 CUP Salad

1 cup Mandarin oranges

1 cup crushed pineapple
1 cup small marshmallows

1 cup grated coconut
1 cup sour cream

Mix, chill and serve.

Stash Enhancement!

I think you can tell by reading previous posts that I REALLY like primmies/quakery styled patterns and Halloweenies! Things have been so busy lately. School ended with all the flurry of activities that always occur. It was fun though and I think a break is due! Work is the usual for me - SOSDD!

I actually have something finished that I can share! Now, don't judge me too harshly. It isn't ironed but I couldn't wait to show you! Join me in my happy dance!

It's one of the gorgeous Quaker Tree freebies offered by The Workbasket. I just loved these when I saw them and knew I had to stitch them. This photo doesn't do it justice. The contrast of the black against the linen is very lovely in person. I'm going to do the other two in the same manner and have them framed the same size. I think it will make a very nice grouping.

Here is my next project. I was going to try to hold out until I finished something else, but what can I say? I adore it!

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack - All dressed in black, black, black... I simply couldn't resist her!

Well it's definitely summertime here! Strawberries are in too - YUM! With the heat, it's definitely time for a cool recipe - let's try a congealed salad I know you'll really enjoy!

Strawberry Congealed Salad

2 1/2 cups hot water

1 pint of strawberries (frozen is fine if you can't get fresh, hulled)

2 large packages of strawberry gelatin

1 cup chopped pecans

1 large block of cream cheese (softened)

Dissolve the hot water and gelatin. Add the strawberries (thawed if frozen). Make cheese balls from the cream cheese and pecans and place in a pyrex dish (space them as this will be cut for serving and it's so pretty with the cream cheese ball in the center of each piece). Pour strawberry mixture carefully over the cheese balls and congeal in the fridge. Serve this summer salad in squares. This is lovely on a salad plate with chicken salad and pretty crackers!

Margaret

MIA For Awhile - But I'm Back!

I can't believe how time has flown since my last post! Where does it go? Life's been very busy in our household - one of the girls hurt her foot pretty badly and was on crutches for quite a while, spring break came and went for the kids, our precious pups have both had back injuries and are still in recovery mode, the AC went out (thank goodness it wasn't August!), work has been nuts - you know exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about!

I've done a little stitching but can't show you any pics (yet). Oh, and it's absolutely confirmed. I'm absolutely crazy for Birds of a Feather halloweenies and quaker/primmies! Slowly building my stash. I just love pulling out the patterns and looking at them - nuts I know! If anyone comes across a BoaF "Poor Jack" let me know PLEASE! I'm drooling for this one! If you have recommendations for other designers and patterns I'd love to hear them!

Well now, how about another recipe from my Grandmother?

                                                             Smothered Pork Chops

8 1” thick pork chops or loins
Brown chops in large 10” black skillet. Pour off oil when browned.

Place 1 and ½ cups of white rice in a bowl with warm water. After 5 - 10 minutes, reach into water and make a ball of rice with your hands. Place a ball of rice on each chop equally. Slice two onions and two bell peppers and place on each chop equally. Gently pour one large can of whole tomatoes over chops and add one can water around edges of pan, careful not to disturb rice. Add salt and pepper.

Cover snugly and cook in a preheated 350° oven for one hour. May need a longer time and a little more water. Check rice after one hour for doneness.

See what I received!

I participated in HOE Valentine's exchange and Gaby absolutely spoiled me! Did I mention that I participated in HOE's Valentine's Day Exchange? Did I mention that once again, in my exuberance, I forgot to take a picture of my stitching and gifties? There are just days when I worry about myself!

I'm stitching on several different things at the moment, though no exchanges. I hope to do some more soon though. They were really fun and I just love looking at other people's beautiful handwork.

We need a pink recipe today! How about a fantastic and easy strawberry cake! Perfect for Valentine's Day I'd say! Bake it in a 9x13 sheet pan for ease - it's still lovely!

Strawberry Cake

1 box white cake mix

1 small box strawberry gelatin

4 eggs

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup water

1/2 package of frozen strawberries (thawed)

Combine all ingredients and bake in a sheet pan at 350° for approximately 30 minutes (check it after about 25 minutes though because this should be a very moist cake.) Make the following icing to pour over the cake after it has cooled.

3/4 stick butter (melted)

1 box 10X sugar

the other 1/2 package of thawed strawberries

Margaret

My First Exchange

Well, I participated in my first exchange on the SBBC blog. I was nervous let me tell you! I wanted so badly to try my hand at a pinkeep - all the ones I see are always so beautiful with the darling pins and lovely trim and fabric. Well - not mine. Can you say "disaster?"

I've looked at step by step blogs and pictures, but what I really need is for someone to sit down with me and physically go step by step through the process. I've a visual/kinetic learner so show me each step and let me do it! I probably need to try and find a class somewhere. Anyway... this is what I came up with instead.

I mixed two favorite craft/hobbies into one for this gift. I thought a stitching scrapbook so my exchange partner, Chris, could showcase all of her wonderful 2009 finishes! I included a few scrapbooking tools with it and managed to cull my pinkeep disaster down so I could make it into an insert for the front of the scrapbook. I even got the colors to match! I threw in a few other little goodies as her stitching and blog inspires me so much! (In my excitement, I forgot to take any pictures so this is from Chris' blog.)

This was great fun and I can't wait to see what my Valentine's exchange partner thinks of her little goodies too! I'm ready to sign up for another one (well maybe a pinkeep class at least!)

Margaret

Before They Go Away

I wanted to post pictures of my family room and living room trees as well. I really had fun with the trees this year. The family room tree was decorated in bright colors and family ornaments - look closely and you'll see our disney ornaments which we have personalized each year to add to our collection.

Next is the living room tree. I always decorate this one as sparkly as possible with metallics, crystal, spun glass, mirrored ornaments - anything reflective and shiny.

I made umpteen batches of buttercrunch candy for gifts. It's fun though and goes over really well! I also made texas sheet cake for my cake eaters, boiled custard (another of my grandmother's recipes and was always served at Christmastime at her home).

I honestly haven't lifted a needle it seems the past week or so. I positively have to finish an exchange and get it out in the mail in the next week. Nearly there though. It's my first and it's been fun! I like it so well I'm going to make myself one too!

As it's New Year's Day, that also means hoppin' john, greens, cornbread, ham and maybe deviled eggs if I have the energy. I decided on tiramisu for dessert - a nod to my husband's Italian heritage, not to mention it's my little girl's absolute favorite - funny isn't it? We did ring in the New Year with sparkling apple cider for the kids and Brian and I enjoyed our bottle of Asti Spumante - goes back to our college days! He says he's always thought of me whenever he had it - isn't that the sweetest?!

So dear friends - here's to 2009. May it be a bright and shiny New Year for all of you. I hope to hear from more of you in the upcoming year and I resolve to be a better friend as well!

Margaret

Still stitching exchanges!

So no pictures to share yet! I wanted to share another of my Grandmother's own recipes that she always prepared at Christmastime. It does make me think of Christmas! I have a few that I'll share over the next few days and I hope you'll try some of them!

Grandmother's Blackberry Jam Cake

2/3 cup butter

1 1/2 cups sugar

4 eggs (whole, beaten)

2 cups jam (Grandmother used her own blackberry jam, I think blackberry's best!)

3 tsp cinnamon

3 cups regular flour

1 cup buttermilk

1 tbsp baking soda

1/2 tsp cloves

1/2 tsp nutmeg

Combine all and bake in two large layer pans at 350° for about 30 minutes. Check it starting around 25 minutes though as ovens are different and you don't want to dry it out! Ice with the following (and be ready for a diabetic coma, but oh so worth it!)

Grandmother's Caramel Icing

4 cups sugar

4 tbsp white Karo syrup

3/4 cup sugar to caramelize

2 tbsp butter

2 tsp vanilla

1 1/4 cup milk

Put the 3/4 cup sugar in an iron skillet to caramelize (see Edgar, I was thinking of you!), shaking the skillet until melted rather than stirring. Meanwhile, have the 4 cups sugar, Karo syrup and milk cooking and boiling when caramelized sugar is added. Be careful this doesn't boil over! Boil to a soft ball stage. Add the butter and vanilla. Cool and bit and beat with a wooden spoon until creamy - watch it as it will set quickly once it gets going - be ready to ice! Spread between layers of your jam cake and ice the sides and top.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!

Some folks say I go a little overboard during the holidays - I say you can't ever decorate enough. I'm up to five trees - yes, five. One in the family room, one in the living room, one in the dining room, one in the boys room and one in the girls room. I just haven't decided how I want to decorate the one for our bedroom yet - I have to "plan" them.

Two of the trees are new this year. They have a few twinkle lights in them and it gives them the loveliest effect. I can't handle blinking lights, but this is just right. Now I need poinsettias!

I'm stitching along on two different exchanges so no pictures! I'm still a bit nervous about them, but I know I'll enjoy getting to know folks from all over and I do think it's fun!

Thought I'd share a picture of one of the trees with you. This is the tree in the dining room. I mixed primitive items with lovely shiny fruits, my grandmother's china tea cups, cups from my antique chocolate set, crystal from the dining room chandelier (yes I took them off to use on the tree), several pieces of my grandmother's silver including a spoon which was her grandfather's and other pretties. I do hope you enjoy these. It is festive to have a tree in the dining room to enjoy with meals!

Margaret

Being Thankful

I know there are times when things are overwhelming - I'm right there with you on that one. Work is crazy, the laundry is breeding, the dust bunnies are forming unions, it seems like everyone wants something from you - I do understand. I also know there is something simple to be thankful for each day. Thankful for having a nice, safe home that needs cleaning (not to mention mortgage-free - woohoo). Thanks for a good job that pays well, has benefits and retirement. Thanks for a wonderful family that generates mounds of laundry (and a wonderful husband that sees to the majority of it).

When I read of the poor people in the Congo that have fled from their homes (such as they are), children seperated from their parents, living in refugee camps being rampaged, starved, terrorized, raped and murdered, I cry for them. I'm safe in my home, with plenty to eat, the comfort of my family and know I can call friends and the police who will be here in a matter of moments to help me. I'm thankful.

I see new pictures of beautiful Afghani (sp?) women and girls who have been permanently mutilated by acid burns simply because they were walking to school, I want to scream. I've had the benefit of wonderful schooling, college and graduate school and know my daughter is going to receive the same gift. I'm thankful.

I see our waters, land and air polluted - the loss of wildlife, of green areas, of potable water - the things we must have to survive - period. But, I know that what I do, the incredible people I work with, the waterways we restore, the land we preserve, the regulations in place to limit water use and consumption and over-development will make a difference to those following. I'm thankful.

I see people losing their homes, children hungry, people despairing - right here - in my country. I'm thankful for all I have and hopeful for our future as a country and a people.

I'm thankful for family and friends (new and old), for all I have been blessed with.

Be thankful.

Margaret

Happy Birthday to Me!

Well, another birthday! The time just whooshes right by, doesn't it? It was a nice weekend though, really. On Saturday, we looked around town for a new computer desk, trying to find something that didn't look so - well, you know. We decided to head north to Orange Park and see what was there and also get inspired for Christmas gifts. Jackpot! We did quite a bit of holiday shopping (or Christmas shoplifiting as my father refers to it) and stumbled on some great bargains to boot!

My birthday surprises were many - a delicious lunch at Mimi's Cafe, some goodies from Bath and Body Works from the kids, a lovely new lipstick from Sephora (my signature color was discontinued so everyone has been on the hunt for a match), new pajamas ("hello boys" they aren't, but they have a Parisian theme and are pink so I think they're quite lovely!), a cute green sweater and - drumroll please - a new Le Creuset 9.5 quart oval french oven! Woohoo! The cooking that's going to occur in this! Oh and I did find my daughter a darling swing style pea coat in a scrumptious raspberry color at Dillards! Too cute!

Anyway - a fabbie birthday with my family, food and fun. Another good year!
Margaret

VOTE!

Vote on your local level! I'm unsure why that is, but it certainly has been! Next week is the wonderful cruise with my husband and my parents. I am READY.

I have decided that I LOVE quaker style stitching patterns (hence the "oats" reference in my title (I know, bad joke)! I've selected one to do for my exchange partner and so far I'm very pleased with how it's coming.

I've been noticing a lot of the stitching bloggers I enjoy reading about are also into other sewing and quilting. I've tried my hand at smocking, which I do enjoy. Looking at the pictures of their trips to fabric stores and seeing all those bolts of fabric always reminds me of my beloved Grandmother.

Besides being amazing at any type of craft, Grandmother always sewed for us - and I mean the most beautiful, tailored, smocked, exquisite outfits you can imagine. And she didn't always need a pattern! If we sketched out the lines of a top or dress we'd admired, she could duplicate it with just our measurements. I really grew up as the best dressed student in school! Not to mention anytime I needed a "dressy" dress or formal!

I remember Grandmother's trips to stay with us. She'd come from Tennessee and stay about a month. Always, always - a suitcase for her things, a suitcase filled with fabric and notions for dressmaking - and - you'll love this - a suitcase for the huge country ham and sausage she'd always bring. I can still remember the smell in the car on the drive back from the airport home! Ah memories - I think we need another of Grandmother's recipes - don't you?

Chess Pie

1 Tbsp flour

1/2 stick butter
1 C white sugar

1 tsp vanilla
½ C brown sugar

¼ C milk
1 Tbsp cornmeal

1 tsp vinegar
3 eggs

Mix all and pour into unbaked crust. I am SO excited and nervous - all at the same time. I checked out my partner's blogspot and, I have to say, what a WONDERFUL stitcher! I just know I'll never be able to do such lovely items for them - I just hope I don't make a fool out of myself for trying this.

While I love the stitching part, finishing is my weakness. I've really never done any real finishing like pinkeeps, flatfolds or biscornus. I don't know what I'll do! I'll give it my best shot anyway - there has to be a first time, right? And I have to decide what to stitch too? How will I ever do this?! I'm just going to pick something - likely to be on the smaller side and probably monochromatic - so I can actually get the stitching done in a reasonable time.

If you have suggestions or finishing tips - believe me - I'd love to hear from you!

Margaret

Not a Happy Camper, But a Happy Baker

I said I'd post progress pictures of my "halloweenie" but I'm just so frustrated! I have to rip out a section I did last night and I just hate re-work! I so want to get it right and I'm afraid it's going to be New Year's before I get it finished. It isn't difficult either, I just get off and am struggling to stitch on the 28 count fabric, but it'll look SO good!

I hate to admit it, but it is getting quite difficult to see to stitch. My husband surprised me with a new magnifier and it is a lot stronger than the one I was using, but I'm still having a hard time. I don't want to lose this wonderful craft and it just upsets me. Still, I'm going to keep on stitching until I can't stitch anymore!

Tonight I'm baking lava cakes for my husband to take to work. I do this every quarter-end. Kind of a tradition now I guess. Even though chocolate isn't my favorite, they're fun to make and they all seem to enjoy them! I'll take some pictures of them tonight!

Margaret

Our 3rd Year!

Today is our third wedding anniversary. And while we've had differences, it's really been quite delightful! My wonderful husband is taking me on a cruise for our anniversary - he spoils me so.

Did you know that the traditional wedding gift for a third anniversary is leather? Oh, I'm struggling to be so good and not go down that path (but what fun I could have with that one - don't think there will be much stitching tonight - lol!) I'll be preparing our anniversary dinner and just haven't quite decided yet what I'm going to cook. I'll have to let you know what I decide and share any recipes with you next time.

So here's to Mr. and Mrs. Brian Vietti and their first three years of marriage - and to the many more years of living and loving yet to come!

Margaret

Happy Fall Y'all!

Well, you wouldn't know it was officially fall here - when I hop in the car and the temperature shows 90+ degrees! Whew! And don't get me started on the humidity... Still, there is the slightest change in the air. There's the tiniest difference in the afternoon light. I feel it. I see it. I can't wait for it!!!

And here's something with a little autumnal feel to it! I really enjoyed stitching this little chart. I liked that it was small (so I could actually finish it). I liked the colors recommended. I liked the slightly primitive feel to it. This one was fun!

To celebrate fall, here's a recipe with a definite fall flair!

Apple Bars

4 tbsp butter

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

2 cups self rising flour

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

2 cups diced apples

1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts would go well I think)

Combine all and bake in a greased 9x13 pan in a 350° oven for 35-40 minutes.

Margaret

Stitching away and end of summer veggies!

I've been valiantly stitching away at a darling Halloween heart pattern (it was a freebie from Savoir-Faire-Vailly) that I've been dying to do for quite some time now. I just love "Halloweenies!" It's an effort because my eyes aren't doing so well due to some medication I'm taking and even with the glasses, magnifying glass and extra light, it's a bit difficult sometimes. Still - it's such fun and I love it! I promise to take a progress picture and post it so you can see how I'm doing.

It's been a while and I think it's time for another recipe! So today it's -

Fried Green Tomatoes

Grandmother said that at the end of the season, the runt tomatoes were used this way. Wash and slice green tomatoes. Dredge in cornmeal. Fry in melted oleo (that's Crisco to you and me) in a cast iron skillet. Salt them in the skillet. Cool until brown only (don't overcook!). Grandmother suggested (in her own handwritten cookbook) eating them with fresh greenbeans, squash, cornbread and marinated cucumber-onion slices. Now doesn't that sound like a wonderful end of the summer supper!

Birthdays

My baby sister Jennifer (okay, so she's seven years younger than I am and I'm a mere child - lol) is having a birthday in the next week. She's an avid (or is that rabid?) reader and I've been contemplating what to do for her birthday. She's NEVER online, so I am not the least bit concerned in showing you what I've stitched for her. I plan on stitching a little border and finishing it as a bookmark.

The picture is a little dark because I took it with my blackberry pearl. Now - which book? One I think she'll enjoy is Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca. I can't believe she's never read it! I've used the reference "Mrs. Danvers" for a few folks more than once - hee hee. I also saw one at my local independent bookstore which had me howling - Stop Dressing Your Six Year-Old Like a Skank - A Slightly Tarnished Southern Belle's Words of Wisdom. Jen would definitely appreciate that one as she, our other sister Rebecca (never referred to as Mrs. Danvers) and I are definitely true, if slightly tarnished, Southern Belles!

Any other birthday suggestions?

Margaret

Labor Day Weekend Begins

Well, I guess summer is about to be officially over! The company my husband works for offered employees free tickets so we decided to go. The weather was typical of Florida summers - hot with sporadic periods of thunderstorms and lightening! Only for a few minutes, just enough to really make the day sweltering! I think it just made the water feel cooler! It was fun!

I haven't been stitching so much lately. Not because I haven't wanted to, just that my hands have been bothering me (RA). Still, I have been reading some wonderful blogs and enjoying fun travel essays. If I can't go right now, I can at least enjoy reading about these wonderful places!

I promise to post a picture of the second matching heart pattern I've completed from TGOSM. It was a wonderful trip. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely. In fact, my darling husband and I are going to do this trip again in October with my parents - woohoo! The weather was perfect and I can't wait!

I wanted to post a small finish. It's from The Gift of Stitching magazine. I enjoyed doing this!

It's the height of summer, so on the recipe front it means - congealed salads!!! Now I know not everyone cares for them, but I promise you that this one goes so well with plain meats (particularly ham!), or just by itself, that you will truly enjoy it. Yes, it's another of my grandmother's.

Hot Bit Salad

Dissolve 8 oz. package of cinnamon hot bits (yes, the little bitty candies!) in 2 cups hot water. Well, I finally took some pictures (please forgive the poor quality, I promise I'll do better) and wanted to share them with you. This is Thistle Manor by Blackbird Designs. I stitched it in a rich, chocolate brown. While the picture is dark, it is lovely in person.

This week will be the last week my husband and I have to ourselves before all the children are here throughout the end of summer (camping, visiting family). I really enjoy spending time with him. We talk, watch movies (or our favorite BBC britcoms we have on DVD), laugh - I truly and thoroughly find him a delight!

I wanted to share another of my grandmother's recipes with you. This is a "goes with everything" mixed vegetable casserole. It truly will go with anything you prepare! It's delicious!

My Grandmother's Mixed Vegetable Casserole

2 10 oz. bags mixed frozen vegetables

3/4 cup mayonnaise

1/2 cup chopped celery

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 tube Ritz crackers, crumbled

2 tbsp melted butter

Cook vegetables as directed (but not to mush, keep them a little firm) and drain well. Mix celery, onions, mayonnaise, cheese and water chestnuts together, then combine with the vegetables. (Here's where I add a little something extra - I like to throw in a dash or two of garlic powder -but you don't have too.) Put all in a greased casserole dish. Spread the finely crumbled crackers over the top. Melt the butter and pour over the top (you can add more if you feel devilish!). Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. This is SO good, you'll make it all the time!

Margaret

A Finish For You

We decided to continue our Harry Potter movie marathon throughout the weekend with number three last night and number four this afternoon. We'll see if we get through tonight or if it carries on through Monday evening.

My wonderful husband decided we needed to get out a bit so he took us to Beef O'Brady's for some wings. They have a small gameroom so my darling daughter was entertained as well! They have good wings too!

Talked with my folks last night. They'll be coming down from Tennessee on the 13th and I can hardly wait! I miss them so much since they moved to Tennessee, but they built a beautiful home and live in such a gorgeous place in the Smokies - who could blame them for staying there?

This is a little pattern I stitched for our attorney/friend, Charlie. Cooked a big breakfast for everyone in the morning. In the afternoon, we decided to go see Wall-E. Very cute movie - we really enjoyed it. Afterward, we did a little shopping and hit the grocery for a few odds and ends. I swear I'm in the grocery every other day!

Later on my darling husband grilled burgers for us. Dee-lish! We decided to have our own movie marathon and watched the first two Harry Potter movies back to back. I had the best peach ice cream - it really tasted and smelled like summer to me - fresh, rich, ripe peaches!

It didn't get dark until around 9 pm. We took my daughter outside and let her do sparklers. We sang "Hurray for the Red, White and Blue" while she sparkled. LOL - truly a patriotic moment! The city did fireworks from a barge in the river. We were able to sit right in the living room and have the perfect view over the trees of the fantastic show. Our local theater runs free movies for children during the week. My daughter and I decided to brave it and went to the 12:30 showing of Alvin and the Chipmunks. It was packed! Wasn't I brave?

Worked some more on Blue Ribbon Designs Alphabet Tree this afternoon. I read them like novels! Besides, the classics, some of the best ones are either those published by church groups or Junior Leagues. Think about it - has anyone ever been to a church function that involved food when the tables weren't just overflowing with wonderful things to eat?

Quite a few years ago (more than I like to admit), I did a cookbook of my grandmother's recipes (her own, as well as those she enjoyed cooking). I gave these as gifts to my family for Christmas. I'd love to update it with more of her recipes. Here's one of the family favorites for you:

My Grandmother's Fudge Squares

2 sticks softened butter

1 cup all purpose flour

4 large eggs

2 cups sugar

1 tsp vanilla

3/4 cup cocoa with just enough water added to make a thick paste - don't try to skip this, recipe will NOT work if you do

Mix the cocoa paste with all the other ingredients. Pour in a greased, lined 9x13 pan at 350° for 25-30 minutes (just until set). Don't bake longer or they'll be dry!

Top with the following icing after it has cooled completely:

1/2 stick melted butter

1 tsp milk

1 tbsp cocoa

confectioner's sugar

Slice into squares and try not to eat them all at once!
